Headache & Migraine Treatment in Lakeville

evaluationFrom being an occasional minor nuisance to causing daily debilitating pain, headaches have many causes and come in multiple forms. At Family Chiropractic and Wellness, we provide expert care to help patients get natural relief from their headaches.

Here’s a look at the different types of headaches:

Tension

With this type of headache, which is the most common we see at practice, it feels like there’s a tight band around somebody’s head. Sometimes it can be a lot of pressure at the base of the skull. This is usually caused by stress related to poor posture.

Migraines

The second most common headache we see are migraines. In most cases, they are on one side of the head. Migraines present differently to every person. Somebody can have something called auras, which may disrupt their vision. Migraine symptoms can cause light sensitivity, noise sensitivity, smell sensitivity or aversions, and even nausea.

When women get migraines, it’s often hormonal-related, coinciding with their cycle starting or ovulation occurring.

Cluster

These types of headaches are more common in males, but we see them in both genders. Very intense headache type symptoms are experienced around the eye with cluster headaches.

Sinus

With this type of headache, it feels like there’s pressure behind the cheeks, in the nose, or in the forehead. When the frontal and maxillary sinuses are overwhelmed, how we treat those headaches is to evaluate which part of the neck is having dysfunction.

Why Do People Experience Headaches?

Specifically, we look at the seven bones in the cervical spine or the seven vertebral segments. We look at the C1-C2 because that is what is most correlated with all types of headache symptoms.

“I always tell patients it’s not the only cause, it’s a piece of the puzzle as to why a person is experiencing the headache there,” said Dr. Jake. We look to upper cervical spines for tension headaches, or cervicogenic headaches, as well as migraines. We also have to consider if there is something we can’t control, such as hormones.

For sinus or pressure-type headaches, we adjust the cervical spine, but we also look to see if there are trigger points or some muscle hypertonicity or tightness in the upper part of the neck. And then we also do some active pressure points over the forehead, over the maxillary sinuses, to help the drainage.

Before Our Providers can provide care, they want to help pinpoint what your headache triggers are. They may ask the following questions:

  • How long has the headache been an issue?
  • Do you get headaches more at the end of the day or the beginning?
  • Are you a heavy computer user?
  • Do you use your phone at night?

Although newer phones have blue light blockers, and the screen is a little less harsh on our eyes and nervous system, if you spend a lot of time on your phone, that can trigger headaches.

Almost every person has a headache as a chief complaint. So we will take at least two X-rays of your neck to see what is going on inside that we can’t see from the outside. The X-rays allow us to see how that is correlated to what you’re experiencing.

Depending on what is found, Our Provider may or may not adjust you. We want to look at all the causes of your headaches. Cranial sacral therapy may also be given to address your headaches.

If warranted, we may recommend supplementation to address your headaches. We offer the Magtein® brand, which is the only magnesium that crosses the blood-brain barrier. If it’s a brain issue, if you will, that’s causing the headaches, this supplement can help calm that down. Many of our patients have had good results with Magtein.
