Get Drug-Free Relief for Your Headaches

Woman with aching headFrom a pounding headache that sidelines you from your daily life to a dull tension headache that could be related to stress and anxiety, headaches can have a variety of causes. Many times a headache is due to prolonged tension in the neck and upper back.

Headaches can accompany neck pain that can be caused by poor posture while working. Stress can increase headaches because of the increased tension in the upper back and neck. When we’re feeling stressed we tend to pull our shoulders up toward our ears and hold that tension chronically, which can pinch some of the nerves that go up through the neck, into the head.

It’s important to note that migraines and tension headaches are not the same things, but tension in the neck can cause restriction in blood flow, which is what causes migraines. So even though a migraine and a tension headache are not the same thing, physical therapy can help mitigate some migraines.

How PT Can Help

Our physical therapist can provide manual therapy techniques to help decrease the tension in those muscles of the upper back and into the neck and give a bit of distraction at the base of the skull to help decrease tension and increase blood flow to the area.

Some Kinesio taping techniques are helpful in supplementing that treatment and can help give relief throughout the week between physical therapy sessions.

What to Expect

We need to determine the cause(s) of your headaches. If there’s a postural element, we can teach you the importance of posture, as well as how to take quick breaks throughout your workday to do a couple of simple exercises.

These won’t take you any longer than 30 seconds to perform. They can help break up that tension versus the tension lasting from when you sit down at the computer to when you go to bed at night. Providing patient education is a big part of our appointment.
